Henry Cavill says that he had “nine shades of hell beaten out of” him while filming two weeks of fight scenes for The Witcher season 3.
With production for The Witcher season 3 currently underway, star Henry Cavill reveals he’s filmed two weeks of fight scenes. Inspired by the work of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and CD Projekt’s video games, Netflix’s The Witcher follows Cavill as the eponymous monster hunter, Geralt of Rivia. Alongside him are Anya Chalotra as the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Freya Allan as Ciri of Cintra—Geralt’s Child of Surprise with the power to transform the Continent. While season 1 adapted stories from Sapkowski’s The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, season 2 looked to Blood of Elves for its inspiration.
In season 2 Geralt and Ciri traveled to Kaer Morhen and met witchers led by Kim Bodnia’s Vesemir. Throughout the season, it was revealed that Ciri has Elder blood and is connected to an Elven prophecy tied to the fate of the world. Despite significant departures from the source material, viewership and critical reception for The Witcher season 2 were strong and it became one of Netflix’s most-watched shows ever. Filming for The Witcher season 3 began in April and season 4 is already being mapped out, which means Geralt is poised to swing his sword for quite some time.
Cavill recently took Instagram to reveal how his body has taken a beating following two weeks of filming fight scenes. In the post, the 39-year-old actor drops a subtle reference to his work on The Witcher season 3 while talking about the Durrell Challenge and what sounds like his generally healthy – albeit rigorous – lifestyle. Cavill has forged a reputation for doing the majority of his stunts and fight scenes. During the filming of The Witcher season 2, he suffered a leg injury and much of season 2’s promotional material showed Geralt with his leg/knee wrapped. The Witcher’s pilot set a standard for the series’ action sequences and Cavill’s physicality, and season 2 upped the action ante in a variety of ways. Going forward, Geralt will likely need to be ready for even more battle at the start of The Witcher season 3 as the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, Nilgaard, Elves, and Wild Hunt all hunt Ciri.
The Witcher season 3 will begin to adapt Time of Contempt and likely follow Ciri’s story as she trains with Yennefer at Aretuza. If the series doesn’t continue skipping ahead, subsequent seasons should likely focus on the stories Baptism of Fire, Tower of the Swallow, and The Lady of the Lake. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and company plan on telling Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer’s story in full as long as the show’s fanbase remains intact. While long-time fans of the franchise have voiced their issues with the series, the one universally acclaimed aspect is Cavill. As a fan of the games and books, he’s done right by the character in almost every way. Hopefully, his body holds up for him to finish Geralt’s story.
