Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 is teasing a storyline that has been successful for the Monsterverse. Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse has steadily been expanding since 2014’s Godzilla. It introduced King Kong in 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, and brought in several titans like Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
After Godzilla established himself as the king of titans, he was then challenged by King Kong in Godzilla vs. Kong. While the two were enemies, they teamed up by the end to defeat Mechagodzilla, and partnered up once more in 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
In 2023, the Monsterverse came to television with Monarch, which explored a secret organization dedicated to studying Titans. Season 2 brings King Kong into the show, and it looks like it’s using a formula that is working well for the Monsterverse.
The Monsterverse’s Godzilla And King Kong Team Ups Have Been Successful
Godzilla fighting against or with King Kong is a concept that’s simply hard to resist. It’s two iconic and gigantic movie monsters punching each other or other monsters with little regard to the damage that they’re doing to their surroundings. It’s incredibly entertaining, and both films have been successful.
2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong release was affected by COVID-19, but that didn’t prevent it from performing well at the box office. It grossed $470.1 million worldwide, despite releasing on HBO Max and in theaters on the same day. Audiences and critics enjoyed it, with the film earning a 75% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The 2024 sequel, The New Empire, wasn’t as big a hit with critics, as it earned a 54% RT critic score. However, it did perform better at the box office, earning $572 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing movie in the Monsterverse. Following this success, it’s not surprising that the next two Monsterverse projects are both team-ups.
The Monsterverse’s Next Two Projects Are Both Continuing This Formula
Season 2 of Monarch premieres on Apple TV on February 27, and the latest trailer teases a new titan that comes from the ocean, and looks like a hybrid of a cephalopod and shellfish. It’s supposedly extremely powerful and requires the help of Godzilla and King Kong to defeat him.
Meanwhile, Godzilla and King Kong are reuniting again in 2027’s Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Plot details are still unknown, but based on the title, it could see the two titans teaming up against an intergalactic threat, possibly SpaceGodzilla or another extraterrestrial monster.
The next two Monsterverse projects show that it’s investing in stories where King Kong and Godzilla can team-up. While it could become a commonplace storyline, it’s still endlessly entertaining to see these two characters fight on-screen together.
