The latest trailer for The Callisto Protocol is drawing comparisons to fellow sci-fi/horror game Dead Space thanks to its ominous atmosphere.
The first gameplay for The Callisto Protocol was revealed at PlayStation’s June 2nd State Of Play showcase. The highly anticipated game has already begun to draw comparisons to fellow sci-fi horror series Dead Space due to its atmospheric, claustrophobic locations and grotesque antagonistic creatures.
The Dead Space comparisons for The Callisto Protocol should be unsurprising considering how the sci-fi survival horror is being developed by Striking Distance, a studio that was founded by former Dead Space creator and executive producer Glen Schofield in 2019. The title was initially revealed with a cinematic trailer at The Game Awards in 2020 and was described as a story-driven, single-player survival game set in the PUBG universe, however, this has since changed as the project grew into its own separate world.
In the latest PlayStation State Of Play showcase, fans were treated to a first look at The Callisto Protocol‘s gameplay. The gameplay saw the incredibly photorealistic protagonist Jacob Lee trying to survive in a claustrophobic, dimly-lit prison on Jupiter’s “dead moon” Callisto that has become overrun by a variety of mutated creatures. These creatures range from slightly disfigured humanoid-type enemies to more alien-like ones that have additional spider-like limbs or mouths that unhinge sideways to devour a human head whole. The trailer also showed footage of the brutal combat in the game, which sees Lee having to dismember his foes both with ranged and melee weapons and hand-to-hand combat that sees him pummelling an enemy into the floor. The Callisto Protocol‘s combat has drawn comparisons to the Dead Space games due to how visceral the combat in that series was, with the noticeable example being where players could use Plasma Cutters to dismember the horrific Necromorphs. Jacob Lee can be seen to be taking a similar approach as he appears to use a variety of weapons, hand-to-hand combat, and his environment to defeat his enemies in a similar way throughout the trailer.
Whilst Schofield’s work with The Callisto Protocol is clearly giving fans of his previous work on Dead Space plenty to look forward to, they can also look forward to revisiting the classic sci-fi horror, as EA has also got a remake of Dead Space in the works, which is due to release on PC and current-gen consoles in January 2023, only one month after The Callisto Protocol. Gameplay footage of the Dead Space remake was revealed last month and demonstrated how ray-tracing and other modern gaming features that are clearly already present in The Callisto Protocol have been used to improve the already atmospheric, intimidating environments of the 2008 title.
Fan response to The Callisto Protocol‘s gameplay trailer has been extremely positive so far, with high praise being given to its graphics and wince-inducing combat. Whilst the somewhat inevitable comparisons to Dead Space have begun, it will be interesting to see how the world created by Striking Distance stands apart when The Callisto Protocol releases later this year.
