Bethesda’s Todd Howard has confirmed that Fallout 5 is planned as the developer’s next game following the release of Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6.
Todd Howard, the acclaimed Bethesda Game Studios director, has confirmed that Fallout 5 will be the developer’s next game following the release of The Elder Scrolls 6. The beloved studio is well-known for its lineup of RPG franchises, which will soon be expanded with next year’s release of sci-fi epic Starfield. Last year Todd Howard revealed plans for Fallout 5 were in the early stages, and now the gaming industry icon has definitively confirmed the future title.
Bethesda Game Studios took the reigns of the Fallout franchise, which was originally created by Interplay Entertainment, back in 2004. While the first two games in the franchise were isometric turn-based RPGs, Bethesda’s Fallout 3 let players explore the post-apocalyptic ruins of Washington D.C. from a first-person perspective instead. Borrowing mechanics from the Elder Scrolls series, the post-nuclear RPG spawned multiple sequels like Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. Back in 2018 Todd Howard officially announced that The Elder Scrolls 6 will follow Starfield, but no mention was made of another Fallout title. Fans have debated whether Fallout 5 or Elder Scrolls 6 will release first, but Howard has now given a definitive answer.
During a recent interview with IGN, Todd Howard confirmed that Fallout 5 will be Bethesda’s next game after the release of The Elder Scrolls 6. The beloved developer is expected to launch Starfield early next year, and the next Elder Scrolls game is already in the pre-production stages. Bethesda is known for its considerably lengthy development cycles, however, so Fallout 5 is unlikely to release any time soon. Still, gamers can take comfort in knowing that Fallout 5 is next on Bethesda’s list rather than a sequel to Starfield or another new property.
Before the launch of The Elder Scrolls 6 or Fallout 5, Bethesda Game Studios will deliver an entirely original cosmic experience. The developer recently showed off Starfield RPG gameplay mechanics during Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, giving fans an idea of what they can expect from the upcoming title. Starfield will let players customize their player character and spaceship before they explore the Settled Systems, an open galaxy of over 1,000 planets. The game will contain Bethesda Game Studios staples, like companions and character perks, but it also looks to innovate with fast-paced gunplay and an unprecedented scale.
Fans of the Fallout franchise can rest assured that another installment is on the way, but it will likely be years before Bethesda even shows the title off. Starfield is set to release next year, The Elder Scrolls 6 will follow it, and only then will players experience a brand-new adventure through post-apocalyptic America. Until then, however, Fallout fans have plenty of other Bethesda titles to look forward to in the coming years.
