The first social media reactions to the Barbie movie are taking the Internet by storm. The comedy, which was directed by Greta Gerwig from a script she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach, is set to arrive in theaters on July 21. It stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken and follows the pair as they travel into the real world after Barbie is exiled for malfunctioning and failing to behave in the perfect manner expected in Barbie Land.
The first reactions to the movie have been shared on social media, fewer than two weeks before the official Barbie release date. Critics and cultural pundits are dropping their brief, spoiler-free thoughts all over social media after the movie’s pink carpet premiere.
Their reviews largely contain effusive praise, including this post from ty, who calls the movie “a classic” and says “I was cackling at Gosling’s himbo Ken.”
Not everyone is one hundred percent sold on the movie, however, as Perri Nemiroff – while praising the craftsmanship of the movie – points out that certain characters “needed more screen time to really dig into and explore to the fullest.” Check out a gallery of other reactions below, largely praising the movie and especially Ryan Gosling’s performance as Ken:
