After the latest Dune: Part Two teaser trailer provided a first look at Austin Butler’s Fyed-Rautha, Twitter users seem to be divided over the villain’s appearance. After the success of the first film in 2021, director Denis Villeneuve is set to return to the world of Frank Herbert’s source material with Dune: Part Two. The upcoming sequel is set to bring back several returning characters, including Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya), while also introducing a new threat for them to face off against.
The Dune: Part Two teaser trailer was released on Tuesday, finally revealing a brief peek at Butler’s Fyed-Rautha Harkonnen. While the teaser has, for the most part, been met with positivity, Butler’s bald look as the villain has divided some viewers, with some expressing shock at his appearance. Check out some of the Twitter reactions below:
Austin Butler’s Dune 2 Performance Won’t Be So Meme-able
After rocking longer hair for most of his professional acting career, it’s certainly understandable why some viewers are surprised by Butler’s transformation for Dune: Part Two. While the transformation is easy to mock and compare to other actors or characters, Butler has proven himself exceptionally talented at his craft. One of the biggest examples of Butler’s acting chops is, of course, his role as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis.
Although reviews of Elvis were somewhat mixed, Butler’s performance and his dedication to the role are major highlights of the film. Not only that, but his role as Tex in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood already proved the actor can effectively play a scary, murderous individual. Butler is next set to bring that same level of dedication and intensity to one of Herbert’s most formidable villains. Villeneuve himself recently described Fyed-Rautha as an “Olympic sword master mixed with a psychotic serial killer.”
Butler’s Dune: Part Two appearance may be startling, but, in action, Fyed-Rautha is set to serve as a major shakeup to Paul’s story. Once Fyed-Rautha is given actual screen time and Butler is able to really bring the character to life, it’s possible that initial gripes about his appearance will dissipate. It remains to be seen how Fyed-Rautha will be brought to life in Dune: Part Two, but the upcoming full trailer release will surely provide a better indication of the villainous Harkonnen action to come.
