Mike Flanagan is back with a new Netflix horror television series, The Fall of the House of Usher, for the Halloween season, and Carla Gugino, who previously starred in The Haunting of Hill House, returns to play another frightening character in the miniseries. The upcoming show, which premieres on October 12, 2023, on the streaming service, is based on the Edgar Allan Poe short story of the same name, but, of course, creator Flanagan puts his own twist on the classic tale. The Netflix series tells the story in a modern setting, and Gugino’s character plays a significant role in the eight episodes.
Aside from Gugino, the cast of The Fall of the House of Usher includes Bruce Greenwood as Roderick Usher, Mary McDonnell as Madeline Usher, Carl Lumbly as C. Auguste Dupin, Samantha Sloyan as Tamerlane Usher, T’Nia Miller as Victorine LaFourcade, Rahul Kohli as Napoleon Usher, Kate Siegel as Camille L’Espanaye, Sauriyan Sapkota as Prospero Usher, Katie Parker as Annabel Lee, Michael Trucco as Rufus Wilmot Griswold, Henry Thomas as Frederick Usher, and Mark Hamill as Arthur Pym. The upcoming show depicts the Ushers, a wealthy family whose patriarch is the CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company, and their gradual downfall, thanks to Gugino’s villainous character.
Carla Gugino’s House Of Usher Character Is Even More Terrifying Than Hill House’s Olivia Crain Ghost
Carla Gugino’s character in The Fall of the House of Usher is Verna, a shape-shifting demon capable of recreating “ghosts” from other people’s pasts. Whereas her character in The Haunting of Hill House, Olivia Crain, appeared as a mangled ghost following her death, the actress is playing a different supernatural entity in the 2023 show. Olivia’s ghost was horrifying in 2018’s The Haunting of Hill House. But the trailer for The Fall of the House of Usher suggests that Verna, who once appears with her eyeball hanging out of the socket, is a new kind of scary that might beat Olivia on the horror scale.
Verna Finally Breaks Carla Gugino’s Mike Flanagan Voice Character Streak After Hill House
Carla Gugino and Mike Flanagan evidently have a fantastic working relationship, seeing as though the actress has appeared in four of his Netflix horror television series, including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and now, The Fall of the House of Usher. Gugino played Olivia Crain in the first series and Older Jamie/The Storyteller in the second show, but her third role was a bit more obscure. Gugino had a voice cameo in Midnight Mass as the Judge, so it was easy to miss her. Thankfully, the actress will return to having a more prominent (and physical) role in The Fall of the House of Usher.
