Bentonville Film Fest 2024 Sets Competition Lineup, Opening Night Film

Amber Sealey’s Out of My Mind will open the 10th annual Bentonville Film Festival, which aims to amplify female, nonbinary, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC and people with disabilities’ voices in entertainment.

The 10th edition of the festival, which was founded and is chaired by Geena Davis, runs June 10-16 in Bentonville, Arkansas. The lineup of premieres — including narrative, documentary, short film and episodic selections — was announced Tuesday by the Bentonville Film Foundation, founding partner Walmart and presenting sponsor Coca-Cola. The Hollywood Reporter is a media sponsor of the event.

Out of My Mind, based on the novel by Sharon M. Draper, will be released on Disney+ later this year. Following the screening, Sealey and Draper, along with star Phoebe Rae-Taylor, will participate in a Q&A.

In addition, Nuked, the recipient of the See It, Be It, Make It Filmmaker Grant presented by NBCUniversal and the BFFoundation, will be included in this year’s lineup as a Spotlight Screening selection. The film was shot entirely in Bentonville.

The festival will screen five world premieres throughout the week. Organizers also have added a new category, the Alumni Showcase, in honor of the 10th anniversary of the festival, that will feature movies from filmmakers whose work has been screened at previous festivals.

Said Davis: “In celebrating BFF’s 10 years of commitment to inclusion, I’m thrilled to present Out of My Mind as our opening film. It’s a universally relatable story about making an impact in the world, while centering artists with differing abilities as both performers and collaborators. Out of My Mind is a humorous and heartfelt manifestation of BFF’s belief that if they can see it, they can be it.”

Organizers noted that more than 75 percent of this year’s competition program is from creators who identify as female or gender non-conforming; 51 percent who identify as BIPOC, Asian or Pacific Islander; 30 percent who identify as LGBTQIA+; 7 percent who are over the age of 50; and 6 percent who identify as a person with disability. In addition, for the 2024 program, onscreen leads are 56 percent women/gender non-conforming, 45 percent BIPOC and 11 percent representing talent with disabilities. More than 60 percent of all selected films have background cast and crews that were made up of a majority of people who identify as female or gender-nonconforming and BIPOC, AAPI or Indigenous.

“Our curated films, led by artistic director Drea Clark, reflect who Bentonville Film Festival is as an organization,” BFF president Wendy Guerrero said. “The selected storytellers represent a range of perspectives, but are united by their ability to transport, impact and inspire audiences.”

A list of projects confirmed for the 2024 Bentonville Film Festival competition follows. Festival passes are on sale now.
