Two-Face embraces his name in a new cover by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau. The Batman villain gets a redesign so shocking it has to be seen to be believed.
The duality obsessed Batman villain known as Two-Face is taking his name to frightening new heights in a new cover. Illustrator Stanley “Artgerm” Lau shows off Harvey Dent in a way that will leave fans speechless.
For decades, former hotshot District Attorney Harvey Dent has been terrorizing the streets of Gotham City as a grotesque criminal mob boss. After being doused with acid that disfigured half of his body, Dent becomes the villain Two-Face and became determined to rule Gotham’s underworld. As part of his “opposing sides” gimmick, Dent uses a coin to determine the actions he takes, making Two-Face Batman’s most unpredictable villain. Despite his tragic fall from grace, Two-Face has shown himself to be one of the most ruthless members of Batman’s rogues’ gallery and has consistently been one of the Dark Knight’s most challenging foes.
DC has previously announced Batman – One Bad Day, a series of one-shot stories that examines some of Bruce Wayne’s greatest villains. Every villain will undergo a trial of sorts that will show what they’re truly capable of after they experience a “bad day” of their own. If a variant cover from Stanley “Artgerm” Lau for Harvey Dent’s one-shot means anything, it looks like Batman’s recurring villain Two-Face is about to have the worst day of all. The cover shows Two-Face, with his non-scarred side looking quite menacing. But his opposite side has gone to a new level of horrifying with the scarred face stretched far past where it should naturally be. Dent seems indifferent as his Two-Face side seems to dominate his head, leaving damaged musculature in its wake. The scarred side looks at the viewer with his trademark grimace and bloodshot eye, but it leaves a far more unsettling impression than usual.
Artgerm’s cover doesn’t bode well for Dent in his upcoming one-shot. Two-Face’s “bad day” might not be good for Gotham, but Harvey Dent may just become a worse and even more tormented version of himself. The solicits seem to imply that Harvey is actually on the brink of leaving Two-Face behind for good. But as the cover posits, the Two-Face personality is simply too powerful for Dent to escape for long.
Years after his creation, Two-Face was adjusted to be an alter brought on by Harvey Dent’s dissociative identity disorder. Harvey’s been at odds with his criminal persona after his accident, with Two-Face generally winning control for their body. Since Harvey Dent’s villainous origin he’s been able to, at times, seize control showing that the once noble DA is still there, somewhere deep inside the supervillain. But if this new cover is any indication, it seems that Harvey’s bad day isn’t just going to bring the evil personality back. Instead, Batman’s former friend may actually lose his war for control, putting Two-Face in charge of their body for good.
