Just one month after the season 1 finale, series creator Quinta Brunson gives an update on the writing process for Abbott Elementary season 2.
Series creator Quinta Brunson shares a writing update for Abbott Elementary season 2. Brunson not only takes on the writing responsibilities but also plays one of the show’s leads, Janine, an optimistic second grade teacher. Abbott Elementary is a mockumentary that centers on the passionate teachers employed at an underfunded, overcrowded Philadelphia public school. Alongside Brunson, Abbott Elementary also features Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, and Chris Perfetti.
Following its premiere in late-2021, Abbott Elementary became a massive success, earning ABC’s highest ratings since the Modern Family series finale with just its second episode. After only 35 days, Abbott Elementary episode 1 shot from 2.79 million viewers to more than a staggering 7 million, and it was this zealous support from audiences that had the show quickly renewed for season 2. Abbott Elementary’s season 2 confirmation came in the form of an in-character letter from Principal Ava Coleman (James) announcing that the camera crew would be sticking around for the 2022-2023 school year.
Following the season 1 finale just one month ago, Bruson is already diving back into Abbott Elementary. The creator annonces on Twitter that she has started the first script of season 2. Although Brunson hasn’t taken much of a break, she’s still thrilled to be working on more episodes of her school-based mockumentary. Check out her tweet below:

Since the Abbott Elementary season 1 finale, Brunson has teased fans with what to expect from season 2. Although she didn’t want to spoil too much (including if Tariq will return, or if Janine and Gregory’s romantic subplot will be developed), she says that she is looking forward to working her own experiences as a single 25-year-old into Janine’s story. She also revealed that audiences can expect a lot of growth from the Abbott Elementary characters as more of their story unfolds. As Barbara deals with reaching retirement age, she will be exploring topics that may be entirely new to her as an older woman, as Brunson suggests a non-binary student may be entering her classroom in season 2.
Abbott Elementary has received extensive acclaim from critics and accrued an extremely passionate fanbase since its debut. Its success is largely due to its hilarious cast, but Brunson revealed that she had to fight to hire lesser-known actors, since there had been a big push to hire some big names. This fight clearly worked out in the end, as the chemistry between the actors is part of what makes Abbott Elementary so revered. Brunson believes that sitcoms should introduce audiences to fresh faces, so it seems likely that any new characters set to appear in Abbott Elementary season 2 will also be portrayed by lesser-known actors. With such quick work being made of the Abbott Elementary season 2 script, fans can hold out hope that this captivating mockumentary will return to screens sooner rather than later.
