As Obi-Wan Kenobi continues airing, it seems prequel fans have finally received their dream Star Wars project. Despite focusing mainly on television at the moment, there are so many possible stories that Lucasfilm could pull from the vast canon of lore.
Arguably, many Star Wars fans have more knowledge of the saga than even the writers working in Hollywood, so perhaps Lucasfilm should be more attentive to fans’ wants, as some of these ideas are just brilliant. With the exception of Taika Waititi’s untitled 2023 film, Lucasfilm has two empty release slots for 2025 and 2027, and these are some great options to fill them.
Darth Bane
Reddit user fingercup suggests “Honestly an R Rated Darth Bane movie origin movie”. In the new canon, not much is known about Darth Bane other than he is the one who created the famous “Rule of Two” followed by the Sith, where there can only ever be the master and the apprentice until the apprentice takes over.
Further fleshing out his origins and depicting the civil war between different factions of the Sith that led to the creation of the rule of two would be integral in this film. While the galaxy’s history following the prequel and original trilogies has been explored in cinema and television, the same can’t be said about the past.
Gritty Clone Wars Film
A Redditor suggested “an R rated live action clone war movie all about the clones. Something that offers the same kind of emotional intensity that Saving Private Ryan and Hacksaw Ridge give.” The Clone Wars brilliantly gave the clones much-needed humanity and characterization.
Having a film showing the brotherhood of the clones in a gritty war environment would be excellent. The opening scene of the 2008 Clone Wars movie demonstrated this, but just imagine the possibilities in an R-Rated feature.
Post-Episode IX Rey Film
While The Rise of Skywalker received a pretty underwhelming reception from both fans and critics, there is still a huge amount of vocal fans who want more stories featuring Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron.
Redditor Tomhur mentions “Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order” as their pick. Since Finn’s role was greatly reduced in Episode IX, this project would give Rey the opportunity to train him and make him the Jedi he should have become. When asked if she would reprise the role again, Daisy Ridley simply said “I’ll always be Rey” at the 2022 BAFTAs.
Dark Forces/Jedi Knight Adaptation
The Dark Forces/Jedi Knight game series introduced fans to the now iconic Kyle Katarn. While his exploits capturing the first Death Star’s plans can no longer happen in the new canon due to Rogue One, his entire arc of starting off as a smuggler to becoming a respected Jedi Master would still work.
Given how grand the character’s story is, Redditor SaltySandSailor suggests having the film series as a quadrilogy. An even better option would be a television series on Disney+, and have it tie in with Luke’s new Jedi temple, which Katarn helped build in Legends. Katarn’s story remains one of the most popular Legends stories fans want to see adapted.
Star Wars Legacy Film
TK_Hughes makes a genius suggestion, saying “Something set like 100+ years after Ep. 9 with a total clean slate, where not even one single existing canon character (or their direct descendants) appears. Just a totally new story with all-new characters and a new status quo, and go from there.”
Given how overused the timeline of the Skywalker Saga has been, it would be nice to have a fresh start where the story isn’t as predictable and fans can be introduced to a brand new era. The Star Wars Legacy comic series did this very well with the story set 130 years after Return of the Jedi, but the only thing is that the main protagonist was a Skywalker. Completely separating the Skywalkers from Star Wars will have to happen soon.
Darth Plagueis
Reddit user nateboo7474 notes “There’s a great book already, but I would love a Plagueis/Early Palpatine movie”. Palpatine’s past has always been a great source of interest for fans. James Luceno’s novel Darth Plagueis has widely been viewed as some of the best material from the entire Star Wars franchise.
Plagueis’ ability to create life from the force also raises the serious possibility that he could have created Anakin Skywalker. A project featuring Plagueis will have to happen at some point. Given that The Acolyte will focus on the re-emergence of the Sith towards the end of the High Republic (100 years before The Phantom Menace), it’s possible Plagueis could make an appearance as an antagonist.
Post-Episode VI Han Solo Film
The 19 years in between Episodes III and IV is set up really well through great world-building and through other forms of media, but the 34 years between VI and VII has not been explored very much. Even how The First Order became as powerful as it was is still unclear.
Reddit user jlm0013 wants “a post-OT movie with Lando, Chewie, and Han, taking place after Han and Leia broke up. Han goes to Lando, with Chewie in tow, looking for work.” With the advancements in CGI technology, recasting these iconic characters isn’t even necessary with how far ILM has come in de-aging. It’s hard to see anybody else but Harrison Ford as Han Solo, and this story would do a really good job showing how Han stopped being the war hero he was in the Original Trilogy.
Thrawn Trilogy
Redditor Heroicunicornslayer simply says “Thrawn trilogy”. Any big fan of Star Wars knows exactly what story this is. Considered by many at the time of the books’ release to be the “true” sequel trilogy, the Thrawn Trilogy were exceptionally written stories by Timothy Zahn.
The stories followed the exploits of Luke, Leia, and Han as they stop the threat of the Imperial Remnant led by Grand Admiral Thrawn, one of the smartest villains in Star Wars. The series introduced fan-favorite character Mara Jade, who has yet to be introduced in the new canon. Given that there already has plans for Thrawn in a major Disney+ crossover event, fans may not have to wait long before seeing him in live-action.
Knights of the Old Republic Trilogy
singer211 doesn’t share much other than “KOTOR trilogy”. Given how important this story is to fans, it’s not a surprise to see this choice on Reddit. When asked about a possible film adaptation at the 2019 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said, per MTV News, “Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now, I have no idea where things might fall.”
A month later, BuzzFeed exclusively reported that Shutter Island writer and Altered Carbon creator Laeta Kalogridis would be penning a Knights of the Old Republic project with the intent of making it a film trilogy. With the video game remake in development, the status of the project remains unknown.
Darth Vader
Considering how electrifying his appearance was in Obi-Wan Kenobi, it’s no surprise hydromatica wants “Vader” as his dream film. While the comics have done a great job at showing Darth Vader’s inner turmoil following the events of Revenge of the Sith, many still want to see that translated in film.
Seeing how Vader mercilessly killed Rebels in Rogue One, having him be the star of his own film in his prime would definitely make for some interesting, and likely bloody, content.
