Jack Black has officially expressed interest in making a School of Rock sequel, or as he quickly dubbed it, “School of Rock 2: Electric Boogaloo.”
Speaking with JOE, the Tenacious D frontman and Kung Fu Panda star lit up at the idea of returning to his School of Rock character Dewey Finn, though had one request should the project ever take shape — the involvement of original writer and White Lotus creator Mike White.
“Mike White wrote the first one, and he’s a genius,” Black said. “We’d have to have Mike White back in the saddle. But he’s real busy right now with White Lotus, the best show on TV.”
As Black pointed out, White is indeed quite busy with HBO’s The White Lotus. The show’s anticipated third season — which is to take place in and around Koh Samui, Phuket, and Bangkok, Thailand — is currently slotted for a 2025 release. The new season boasts another star-studded cast, including K-pop star Lisa (of BLACKPINK).
Black, for his part, has remained busy himself. Beyond getting “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie stuck in everyone’s head in 2023, the actor recently starred in Kung Fu Panda 4 and is set to appear in the new film adaptation of Borderlands. Should White call with an idea for School of Rock 2, though, we have a feeling he’d make room in his schedule.
Originally released in 2003, School of Rock followed the escapades of Black’s Finn, who, after pretending to be a substitute teacher in order to make rent, teaches a classroom full of kids how to absolutely rock. Despite never receiving the sequel treatment in the two decades since, the film has inspired a plethora of other media, including a Nickelodeon series and a Broadway production.
