Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves directors will have Ryan Reynolds join their upcoming action-adventure, partnered with Apple and Skydance. Reynolds previously collaborated with Apple on the holiday movie Spirited, which was a massive hit for the streaming service. The actor also has strong connections with Skydance, having previously collaborated with them on The Adam Project and Michael Bay’s Six Underground for Netflix.
Deadline reports that Reynolds will star in Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley’s latest movie, Mayday. Kenneth Branagh was also confirmed to join the casting. The directing duo also wrote the screenplay, which was reportedly finished before the WGA strike began. The action-adventure movie could start production after Reynolds is done with Deadpool 3, which is currently filming in the United Kingdom. Details on Reynolds and Branagh’s characters are kept under wraps alongside the film’s logline.
Everything We Know About Mayday
While plot and character details about Mayday are currently under wraps, some updates could hint at what type of film it will be. The movie is billed as an action-adventure tentpole based on an original pitch from Goldstein and Daley, potentially done in the vein of movies like Romancing the Stone and Indiana Jones. With Reynolds as the lead, the movie could also be reminiscent of Red Notice, an action-adventure film he previously starred in alongside Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot. It is unclear which character Branagh will play, but he could portray an antagonist or a sidekick to Reynolds’ character.
Apple and Skydance have been building their partnership for quite some time. Skydance Animation is a major part of Apple’s future animated efforts, and the main studio has already produced Ghosted starring Ana de Armas and Chris Evans. While critics and audiences widely panned the movie, Ghosted became Apple TV+’s most-watched feature film debut. They also worked together on Peter Farrelly’s The Greatest Beer Run Ever, starring Zac Efron, Russell Crowe, and Bill Murray.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger will produce the movie alongside Reynolds, Johnny Pariseau, Ashley Fox, and Patrick Gooing for Reynolds’ production company, Maximum Effort. The production company previously collaborated with Apple for Spirited and with Skydance for The Adam Project. More updates will likely come out for Mayday, including plot details and more casting news.
