It’s been five years since Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) walked into New Amsterdam and took over as medical director, and now it’s time to say goodbye.
“This place saved me,” Max says in the promo for the two-hour New Amsterdam series finale, airing January 17 at 9/8c. The preview, which you can watch above, also shows sweet moments between Max and Dr. Elizabeth Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank), whom he chose despite his ex-fiancée Dr. Helen Sharpe’s (Freema Agyeman) return to New York, the doctors working, and most worrisome, Dr. Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery) rushing to the OR with a patient.
It begins with “Right Place,” which sees Max and Wilder facing a dilemma over approvals for a revolutionary cancer drug as he learns a secret about his own bout with cancer. Also, Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) goes the extra mile to correct a dire medical situation, and Dr. Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine) tries desperately to help a woman in need. Then it ends with the very aptly-titled “How Can I Help” (a.k.a. Max’s mantra), in which everyone’s story reaches a surprising yet inevitable conclusion.
When it comes to how it all ends, “I want to leave the audience with the feelings they felt when they first fell in love with the show,” showrunner David Schulner previously told TV Insider.
Teased Sims, ” I think that we’ll wrap up the show with that mantra moving forward — How can I help? — for generations to come.”
Added Labine, “I think it’s a really lovely, careful, thoughtful way to end the show. I’m excited to see what people think. It’s not a traditional finale for a show. There’s actually a lot of origins in the finale that kind of bring it all back to square one.”
Scroll down to check out the photos from the final two episodes of the NBC drama. They include a look at young Max (!), possibly when his sister was a patient at the hospital (where she died).
