The Huawei Pocket S is the brand’s second clamshell-style foldable smartphone, but it isn’t a follow-up to the Huawei P50 Pocket, announced nearly a year ago. The new foldable smartphone is the second from the Chinese manufacturer this year. In the first half of the year, it announced the Mate Xs 2, a foldable smartphone with an outward folding design.
Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the Mate Xs 2 has a single display that doubles as the cover screen when in its folded state and as the main display when unfolded. Huawei also has a foldable in the style of the Galaxy Z Fold, but that model didn’t get a refresh this year.
Huawei unveiled the Pocket S in China, and while news of a global release is still unknown, there is a possibility it may make it to other regions, like the P50 Pocket. The Pocket S shares a striking resemblance to the P50 Pocket, and that’s because it is practically the same phone but with a few key differences. The weight and dimensions are unchanged, and it also lacks any form of dust and water resistance. An interesting change that Huawei has made is offering the Pocket S in several colorways, although not with as many options as the Galaxy Z Flip Bespoke Edition. Unlike the P50 Pocket, which was launched in three colors excluding a special edition, the Pocket S will be available from Huawei’s web store in Silver, Green, Gold, Pink, Blue, and Black.
A P50 Pocket With A Less-Powerful Chip
Like the P50 Pocket, the Huawei Pocket S smartphone has a 6.9-inch 120Hz OLED display with a 2790 × 1188 resolution, 300Hz touch sampling rate, and support for DC dimming. There is also a round 1.04-inch external display with a 340 × 340 resolution. Huawei has swapped the Snapdragon 888 chipset for the mid-range Snapdragon 778G processor. Unfortunately, there is no 5G support as Qualcomm can’t supply Huawei with 5G chips. The chipset is paired with 8GB of RAM, and buyers have the option to choose from 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage.
The Huawei Pocket S has a 10.7MP camera for selfies and videos, and it is nestled inside the punch hole in the screen. It also has a 40MP f/ RYYB sensor that can capture more light and a 13MP f/2.2 ultrawide angle camera that can be used for shooting macro images. Unsurprisingly, Huawei has dropped the 32MP Sunscreen camera available on the Huawei P50 Pocket. The new foldable has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6, NFC, and dual-frequency GPS. Huawei has left the battery unchanged, so users get a 4000mAh battery with support for 40W fast charging. However, it ships the Pocket S with the newer HarmonyOS 3.0.
Since the Huawei Pocket S is practically a toned-down version of the P50 Pocket, it is no surprise that it costs less. The phone has a starting price of ¥5998, which converts to about $823. That is significantly cheaper than the P50 Pocket, which launched for ¥8988, and the Galaxy Z Flip 4, which starts at $999. It even comes with a charger and a case in the box.
