Wednesday co-creator Alfred Gough opens up about whether Netflix’s upcoming Addams Family series could potentially receive a season 2 renewal. The show stars Jenna Ortega as the titular daughter of the beloved, darkly comedic family. Helmed by Gough, Miles Millar, and acclaimed Hollywood director Tim Burton, Wednesday will premiere on Netflix on November 23.
Initially announced in October 2020, Wednesday is the return of the Addams family to television screens, this time centering on Ortega’s Wednesday Addams. Sent to attend Nevermore Academy, Wednesday takes it upon herself to unravel the mysteries involving the town and her family as she adapts to her new school, balancing psychic powers and supernatural horror with the trials of high-school life. Ortega is joined by Luis Guzmán, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Isaac Ordonez, and George Burcea in bringing the creepy and kooky twist on the typical 20th-century American family to life, with Christina Ricci and Gwendoline Christie cast as new supporting characters that the family will come across. And while Wednesday season 2 hasn’t been confirmed, the series’ creators are hopeful about the show’s future.
In an interview with Empire alongside Millar, Gough reveals he is optimistic about the potential future for Wednesday, referring to the upcoming episodes as only being a single season of the show. Revealing that he and Millar have discussed among themselves what could come next, the co-creator states they are keen to explore the rest of The Addams Family‘s world. Check out Gough’s response below:
Miles and I are talking amongst ourselves about it. There’s definitely more that you can explore in the world of the Addamses.
How Wednesday Could Lead To More Addams Family Shows
Rather than existing as a completely new adaptation of The Addams Family, both Millar and Gough have emphasized the show will allude to the beloved franchise’s history by stating that Wednesday isn’t a reboot, and instead builds on what has been depicted in the original TV series and Barry Sonnenfeld’s ’90s movies. As such, the world of Wednesday is potentially already a well-developed setting that could be expanded on in future seasons, or in other potential Addams Family shows, depending on its success. One such way Wednesday‘s world could be expanded upon is by focusing on the rest of the Addams family, including currently uncast characters like Uncle Fester, Grandmama, and Cousin Itt. Furthermore, Wednesday will also introduce audiences to the setting of Nevermore Academy, a school with a long history that serves as a safe haven for supernaturally gifted students. Nevermore Academy features heavily in Wednesday‘s promotion, so a show focusing on the school could also be an interesting way to expand Wednesday‘s world.
Wednesday is shaping up to be a perfect continuation of The Addams Family, keeping with the series’ tone and core elements while also featuring an accessible premise for new audiences. Be it through the original comics and TV show, their animated adventures, or Sonnenfeld’s film duology, The Addams Family continues to be recognizable and beloved across multiple generations and has maintained a strong following. As such, dedicated fans of the macabre family are sure to be pleased that Wednesday‘s creators are enthusiastic about continuing the show for multiple seasons.
