Dylan O’Brien Debunks Recent Rumors He’s Returning For Teen Wolf Movie

Due to rumors over him potentially appearing in Teen Wolf: The Movie, Dylan O’Brien once again states he won’t be returning to play Stiles.

In a new interview, Dylan O’Brien debunks a recent rumor that he is returning for Teen Wolf: The Movie. The film, which is based on the hit 2011 MTV series, arrives on Paramount+ this October featuring many of the paranormal drama’s fan favorite characters. Both Tyler Posey and Tyler Hoechlin are set to return in their lead roles as Scott McCall and Derek Hale, while those like Holland Roden, Colton Haynes, Shelley Hennig, and Crystal Reed are also back. The film is directed by Russell Mulcahy and written by Teen Wolf series creator Jeff Davis.

For the entirety of Teen Wolf‘s run, O’Brien played Stiles Stilinski, Scott’s best friend and one of the lone characters to have no initial ties to the supernatural. He was a fan favorite character, which is why so many hoped he would be among those returning for the revival film. Unfortunately, in March of this year, O’Brien confirmed that he will not be participating in Teen Wolf: The Movie. While he expressed his love and support for the cast and crew, and even stated that Teen Wolf will always be dear to his heart, O’Brien felt like he left Teen Wolf in a good place and does not have a desire to reprise his original role.

In an interview with Decider, the question of O’Brien’s potential return in Teen Wolf: The Movie reemerges. The interviewer asks the actor about rumors of a possible change of heart in his decision. Rumors of O’Brien’s reprisal emerged during a Teen Wolf panel at San Diego Comic-Con. However, nothing has changed on the Stiles front. O’Brien says:

No, I’m sorry to report. I don’t know where those rumors come from! Yeah, oh my God San Diego Comic-Con… I was texting with, Tyler [Posey]—you know, with T-Pose—because Comic Con for us—I mean, we were first there when we were kids after we did the [Teen Wolf] pilot. I think we got put into Hall H by a random change of schedule or something. Obviously, we didn’t even come close to filling it. We were like, 18. Comic-Con is so stitched into our hearts, so it was so cool to see them back up there on a panel again, now doing the movie. It’s all happened so fast. It’s like so crazy to me that it already feels like it’s coming out. I love those guys. Tyler… it cannot be accurately stated like what we mean to each other, and what that show was for us. It was our school, it was our home, it was like so much for us. It’ll forever be incredibly meaningful to me. And it was tough to come to the decision that I came to, but I do think I came to the one that was most true to myself right now. And I can’t wait to watch it.

Dylan Obrien as Stiles in MTV Teen Wolf

These rumors came to light when, during the Teen Wolf SDCC panel, Posey announced to fans that every character they would want to see is present in the movie. That suggestion of everyone’s return led many fans to believe there was still a possibility of O’Brien’s character showing up in Teen Wolf: The Movie, as Stiles is arguably one of the original show’s most beloved characters. However, O’Brien once again puts those rumors to bed in this interview. The actor defends his decision to not participate, claiming that while it was a difficult choice, he had to stay true to himself. The persisting rumors show just how much the Teen Wolf fanbase would like to see him return, but in the end, it needs to be O’Brien’s decision.

At the same SDCC panel where the Teen Wolf: The Movie trailer was revealed, Davis suggested the possibility of continuing the franchise beyond this film. While purposively vague, it does give fans of the series something to speculate about and look forward to. Whether this is through additional sequel films or a reboot of the series remains to be seen. However, it does open up the possibility for O’Brien to make appearances in future Teen Wolf projects. He so far sounds secure in his decision to leave Stiles in the past, but no one knows what the future holds. Teen Wolf: The Movie is missing a key figure, but at least O’Brien will be cheering everyone on from his couch.
