Cosmo the Spacedog is getting an expanded role in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and will be voiced by Maria Bakalova.
Fan favorite Marvel canine Cosmo The Spacedog is joining Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the voice for the character has been revealed. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to be the final entry in this current interation of the Guardians and the final one directed by James Gunn. The film is set for release on May 5, 2023, and will see the team face off against The High Evolutionary played by actor Chukwudi Iwuji.
The character of Cosmo the Spacedog was created by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning in 2008 and is a telepathic Soviet dog who in the comics was a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy typically operating out of the severed Celestial head Knowhere, the de facto base for the Guardians in Abnett & Lanning’s run. Cosmo appeared in the MCU in a non-speaking cameo role as part of the Collector’s collection in the first Guardians of the Galaxy and was freed in the end credit sequence, later to return in another cameo during the credits of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It appears Cosmo will get an expanded role in the third film as the voice performer has been announced.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2022 during the Marvel Studios panel, the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 came out on stage. Joining the returning stars was Academy Award nominee Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm). It was revealed at the panel that Bakalova not only voices the character Cosmo the Spacedog, but was on set for all of her scenes too. Where Cosmo was a male dog in the comics, Gunn’s version is based on the real-life dog Laika, a female dog sent to space and who died in orbit in 1957.
Bakalova was already confirmed to join the cast back in June 2022 but it was unknown what character she was playing. The character of Cosmo is rumored to appear in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special coming to Disney+ in December so that might be where audiences first hear Cosmo speak in the MCU setting. While a relatively new character in the comics, Cosmo has already appeared in both the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series and the recent video game.

Cosmo’s role in the films plot remains unknown but with the involvement of The High Evolutionary, who in the comics is known for experimenting on animals it might be an indication of the characters involvement. The High Evolutionary is also likely connected to the origin of Rocket Raccoon possible forming some type of connection between Rocket and Cosmo. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 expansion of Cosmo continues a recent trend of animal characters in the MCU like Goose the Flerken who resembles an Earth cat, Gator Loki, and Lucky the Pizza Dog.
