The Rookie Season 8 Episode 1 Recap: Czech Mate

Woot! The Rookie is back, and we could not be more excited about it.

We know the drill. Some of you just prefer a scene-by-scene recap of the shenanigans, and we have you covered with our recap below.

If you’re looking for our thoughts, check out our The Rookie Season Premiere Review.

(Disney/Larry Horricks)

We open in Prague, and Garza and Harper have just received notice that Monica is at her location with Bailey and Nolan, who are bringing her to a hotel. Seriously, WHY is Bailey even there?! This is already ridiculous.

As Harper and Garza brief fellow law enforcement agencies, they note that an LAPD escort and Bailey’s military status are how they’re justifying her presence. The game plan is for Monica to take part in an arms deal with a weapons titan.

At a costly Prague hotel, Monica takes the big room, and Bailey wonders if they can add extra days to their vacation.

Back in LA, Lucy returns home to Celina, doing yoga, and they talk about why Lucy and Tim haven’t made a go of their relationship now that Lucy is a lieutenant.

Meanwhile, at the station, Angela is having a similar conversation with Tim. My Latina Queens being the best Besties to bestie, we love to see it!

They both call Tim and Lucy out for being terrible communicators and also offer to meddle in their relationships to fix things.

(Disney/Mike Taing)

Everyone heads into the office for the brief with Nolan and Harper from Prague, and Nyla and Angela totally start gabbing like besties. So cute.

In LA, they have to hit up the ports to see where the weapons could be coming out of. After the meeting, Smitty tells Miles he’ll charge $900 as a fee for staying in the lot.

Miles and Tim are staking out the ports and find a suspect that they alert everyone else about. All the cops are in plainclothes, and the suspect manages to drive Smitty off the road to escape. Celina and Lucy join the high-speed chase to catch the guy, and they manage to run him off the road and capture him.

He has to go to the hospital for the injuries he sustained in such a bad accident, and Grey demands to talk to the perpetrator even when he needs surgery. Luna argues with Wade about getting the suspect the help that he needs.

Grey says he’ll drop all charges for information, and the suspect gives them the terminal to track it. Grey gives them information and tells Angela to bring Wesley with them, since they know Wagner will have an army of lawyers scrutinizing everything they do.

(Disney/Mike Taing)

Monica makes Bailey pose as her assistant and Nolan as her bodyguard, and she brings in a bunch of designer clothes for them to wear because they have to dress in style. Nolan gives the girls a whole fashion show, which is thoroughly amusing, and Monica and Bailey lowkey seem like besties, which is less funny.

Monica says she’ll pay for all of that by putting it on the room bill for the government to cover. Good times.

Miles and Tim are in the stakeout van at the dock. Smitty is on his own, talking in cheesy 90s slang, to the dismay of others. And Angela and Wesley are hanging out in their own car until she tells him that she’s headed to talk to Tim about his relationship.

Angela kicks Miles out, sending him to sit with Wesley so she can grill Tim about talking to Lucy about their relationship. They’re giving us so many bestie moments already! Love that for us!

Monica, Bailey, and Nolan are in the city, and they pick up a tail. They’re trying to figure out who exactly it is and which of the many people Monica has pissed off is after her.

(Disney/Larry Horricks)

The guy sneaks up with a gun, sees Nolan and Monica, and Bailey jumps him and kicks his butt from behind because, of course, they have to have a Badass Bailey moment. Whatever.

Miles is with Celina when Angela interrupts them to debrief with Celina. They’re teaming up to deal with the Tim/Lucy situation. They’re hilarious together in all of their meddling glory.

Garza and Harper catch up with Monica, Bailey, and Nolan. They don’t know who the guy is yet, and Harper cracks that Monica is “uniquely hateable.” Accurate.

Wegner calls Monica and says he didn’t know she was a wanted woman in the States. He seems ready to back out of the deal, but she talks him back into it, and they meet.

Back in LA, Smitty has Miles bring the snacks to him, and he again tries to talk him into paying the rent for the lot. At the station, Luna talks to Grey about his actions and his near violation of the suspect’s civil rights.

(ABC/Screenshot)

It becomes a full-blown argument about Luna loving her new career and Grey supposedly never retiring. Grey feels like Luna’s job is taking her away from him, and they never see each other, and he feels like she’s choosing her job over him and their relationship. The irony is … oof!

Why are Mom and Dad fighting? I don’t like this.

Lucy clocks in for her shift during the stakeout, sitting with Celina, and Celina tells Lucy that Tim needs her in the surveillance van. Meanwhile, Miles gets a text and tells Tim that Lopez needs him.

Chenford ended up meeting in the middle to talk. Tim apologizes to Lucy for not talking to her for three days and admits he’s scared. Lucy reassures him that his being less toxic and more healed is a turn-on and will work.

They talk about making it work, and he tells her that he loves her. He returns it. She tells him to ask her out, and he says he doesn’t want to ask her out; he wants her to move in with him.

After he promises to be a better communicator, they kiss, and she says yes. This all happened really fast, but I don’t care. Let’s go Chenford!

(ABC/Screenshot)

They have a meeting with Wegner and debate whether they can grab him there, despite the many civilians. Nolan makes the move.

Meanwhile, in LA, they also make their move at the port. It’s a maze and intense, a shootout takes place, and it looks like Lucy took a bullet, but she twisted her knee instead.

Amid the commotion in Prague, Monica disappears. She meets up with one of her associates in an abandoned church. Monica tells Bailan that she’s broke and that the jewelry she just secured is what she needs to live on.

Harper tells Nolan that the assassin who came after Monica worked with the rich Argentinian, and he sent more. A bunch of guys go after them, and Bailey and Nolan end up in a shootout.

While Bailey and Nolan are fighting off assassins, one almost kills Monica, but Nolan has her duck and kills the assassin.

(ABC/Screenshot)

On the plane, Garza gives Monica only one necklace because it’s the only legally purchased one, and she can use it to live on. Even if it means living as a “poor person.”

Garza talks to Harper about potentially joining the FBI, but for now, he wants her on a multi-agency task force to pursue the rest of Monica’s list.YESSS!

Harper declines for now because of James and the kids, but something tells me that it won’t be a no for long.

Grey brings Luna flowers to apologize. She tells him that she’ll be home later and she’s happy. It seems like things are okay, but he gets a phone call from Landon.

Lucy tells Celina about moving out, and Miles takes Celina up on the offer to move in. YES!

(Disney/Larry Horricks)

Grey meets with Garza. Garza asks Grey to be on the task force, and Grey takes it.

That means Bradford will get Grey’s job. Meanwhile, Bradford is just thrilled that he and Lucy have finally reunited. They’re basking in afterglow, and he’s already preparing her move for her.

Bailan gets to stay an additional two days in Prague for Operation Second Honeymoon. They kiss and celebrate, but then they hear freaking RODGE singing that damn song on the bridge.

This bit has been old for a LONG TIME NOW, but your girl called it that they’d force him into this Prague adventure somewhere.
