From her mysterious birth to her powerful connection to Eywa, Sigourney Weaver’s Kiri has long been a unique anomaly in the Avatar franchise. Now, James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire & Ash has shed some exciting new light on Kiri’s origins.
Avatar: Fire & Ash confirms that Kiri isn’t just spiritually gifted. Based on her unique conception and connection to Pandora itself, Kiri represents something entirely new for the Na’vi People, embracing a role that has now been recognized in this new movie far more than in the first two Avatar movies.
Avatar: Fire & Ash Confirms A Major Kiri Theory (She’s A Clone)
Fire & Ash confirms that Kiri is genetically identical to the avatar of Grace Augustine (Weaver’s original role), having a complete DNA match to the original body. Supporting what was already highly suspected by audiences, Fire & Ash also reveals that Kiri has no biological father, answering the lingering question Kiri herself had been struggling with as we saw in 2023’s The Way of Water.
Instead, the adopted daughter of Jake Sully and Neytiri was born through parthenogenesis. Grace’s avatar became pregnant without fertilization, making Kiri a perfect genetic copy rather than a traditional offspring.
This occurred during the first Avatar movie when the Na’vi attempted to transfer Grace’s consciousness from her dying human body to her avatar body. While connected to the Tree of Souls, Kiri is told that Eywa mysteriously placed a seed within Grace’s avatar body, an unprecedented event resulting in Kiri’s future birth.
As such, Kiri isn’t exactly a full resurrection of Grace Augustine (despite being played by Sigourney Weaver). She is something closer to a daughter shaped by Eywa herself (Kiri does refer to Grace as her “mom” in the spirit world).
Keeping that in mind, it seems as though Kiri was born for a reason, especially considering her incredibly unique abilities seen in The Way of Water, and more importantly, in Fire & Ash.
Kiri Is A “Chosen One”, Her Unique Connection To Eywa Explained
Kiri’s unique clone status and conception more than likely explain her unmatched connection to Eywa. It’s been confirmed that Kiri’s bond with Ewya is greater than even the most gifted tsahìks like the Omatikaya’s Mo’at or the Metkayina’s Ronal (the spiritual leaders of their clans).
Unlike other Na’vi, Kiri’s bond is incredibly strong and inherently instinctual, as we see her connecting to Eywa and Pandora’s organic network in ways she herself doesn’t understand until after she does them. A prime example is when she used mycelium to change Spider’s biology, allowing him to breathe the moon’s air without a mask.
However, both The Way of Water and Fire & Ash have proven that connecting to Eywa can come at a cost. Kiri’s seizures look to be moments where her body goes into full overload as she struggles to process Eywa’s vast consciousness. Despite the strain, Kiri demonstrates abilities no other character possesses, bonding with various creatures and plant life on a level no one else can.
That said, the ending of Fire & Ash sees Kiri finally reaching Ewya herself, looking upon the face of Pandora’s deity and calling upon her spirit to aid in the movie’s final battle.
Likewise, it seems as though Kiri herself has finally unlocked even greater power following this encounter, as seen when she manages to overpower The Ash People’s Varang, wielding a powerful voice that could have only come from Eywa herself.
Even before the final battle, Ronal explicitly calls Kiri a “Chosen One,” marking the first time such a title has been given to Kiri, though it certainly seems to be true that she has indeed been chosen and conceived by Eywa for a greater purpose.
The implication made by the end of Fire & Ash is that Kiri has very much become a key conduit and extension of Eywa’s will, just as she was likely always destined to be.
Breaking Down Kiri’s Potential Future In Avatar 4 & 5
Kiri’s future now carries massive implications for Pandora and perhaps even beyond, and it’s easy to imagine her becoming even more of a central character in Avatar 4 & 5. Perhaps Kiri could even be the narrator of one or both future movies, just like her brother Lo’ak, who took over from Jake for Fire & Ash.
One can assume that Kiri’s power through Eywa will continue to evolve and grow, opening the door for her to perhaps become Pandora’s savior as a full messianic figure.
Just like Jake’s status as Toruk Makto, who’s able to inspire and unite various Na’vi clans as one, Kiri could definitely become a similar force that unites the entire moon of Pandora itself on a level we’ve never seen before.
Likewise, if the future Avatar movies do return to Earth (as has been rumored), it would be fascinating to see if Kiri’s abilities could extend beyond Pandora and if the power of Ewya could be used to influence and perhaps even restore other worlds.
Without a doubt, audiences should fully expect to see much more of Kiri and her ongoing evolution as the Avatar franchise continues.
