When Adam and I drove up to Santa Barbara for the wellness retreat I hosted earlier this month, I knew it would be beautiful—but I didn’t expect how deeply restorative it would feel. We stayed at Paraiso, part of a stunning collection of six Spanish-style homes in Montecito designed by some very talented friends of mine. From the moment we arrived, surrounded by olive trees and golden light, I felt an exhale I hadn’t realized I needed.
Between starting the day with beach walks, wandering through Summerland’s design shops, and lingering over dinners that helped us slow down and savor, this trip was exactly the soulful, design-forward reset that Santa Barbara does best. With its white stucco walls, red tile roofs, dusty succulent gardens, spindly palm trees and slight European flair, it’s no wonder it’s been called the Spanish Riviera of America. Here’s my personal guide to the spots I love most—for where to stay, eat, shop, and soak up the California magic.
WHERE TO STAY IN SANTA BARBARA
Paraiso Collection, Montecito – We stayed here this trip, and it was pure perfection. The six historic homes on property have been completely reimagined, each designed with a level of intention and luxury that’s rare to find in a rental. Think: arched doorways, natural textures, curated art, and airy indoor-outdoor living. It’s the kind of space that invites you to slow down, pour a glass of wine, and watch the sunset from the terrace.
Santa Ysidro Ranch, Montecito – The iconic hideaway that feels like stepping into another era. Lush gardens, private cottages, and the faint scent of citrus in the air make it one of the most romantic stays in California. We celebrated Adam’s birthday here with dinner at The Stonehouse—and it was as magical as you’d imagine.
Hotel Californian, Santa Barbara – If you prefer staying closer to downtown, this boutique hotel blends Moorish-inspired architecture with a modern edge. It’s steps from the waterfront and ideal for anyone wanting walkable access to State Street and the Funk Zone.
The Simpson House – This beautiful bed-and-breakfast inn features an acre of manicured English gardens just a short walk from Santa Barbara’s arts and culture district. There are 15 guest rooms in the main house as well as elegant suites and cottages, each with a wood-burning fireplace.
El Capitan – These tents and cabins aren’t your average camping experience. Just north of Santa Barbara and location right by the beach, El Capitan is the ultimate glamping stay and a great way to experience the El Capitan Canyon. If you’re not up for cooking your own meals, head to the fresh and tasty Canyon Market and Deli. Perfect for a trip with the kids!
WHERE TO EAT
Breakfast
Field + Fort, Summerland – Our first morning stop and one of my all-time favorites. It’s a hybrid café and home shop that feels like something out of a European village. The coffee is excellent, the avocado toast is piled high, and you can browse their beautifully curated collection of ceramics and linens while you wait.
Jeannines – Stop by for a classic cozy breakfast at this spot that’s always packed with locals. With three locations, it’s easy to find one close to you!
D’Angelos – This snug little bakery offers housemade breads, pastries and other light eats with sidewalk seating.
Summerland Beach Café – A laid-back, dog-friendly spot that’s perfect after a morning beach walk. Expect hearty breakfasts, strong coffee, and a front porch that feels like home.
Lunch
Lily’s Taquería – This little-known taco shop is tucked in downtown’s far end and offers cheap, delicious and unfussy tacos.
Savoy – Laid-back and full of healthy fresh made options, this cafe was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives for good reason! We stopped in after a stroll through State Street and downtown for one of my favorite simple and healthy lunches.
Lilac Patisserie – One of my personal favorites, this all gluten-free bakery and cafe is a gluten intolerant’s dream. We’re talking avocado toast and sandwiches made with their amazing artisanal bread and to-die-for tarts, pastries, cupcakes and cheesecakes.
Santa Barbara Public Market – An upscale urban market with tons of different options, this is the perfect spot for a stroll through and a casual lunch.
Brophy Brothers – For a lively and casual lunch or dinner, head to Brophy Brothers for fish and chips overlooking the water.
Dinner
The Stonehouse at San Ysidro Ranch – We had Adam’s birthday dinner here, and it was unforgettable. Tucked into the hillside, surrounded by blooming gardens, this restaurant is the definition of romantic. The seasonal California cuisine—like halibut with citrus beurre blanc and the best chocolate soufflé—makes it a true destination meal.
Loquita – Spanish-style tapas and craft cocktails in a vibrant, design-forward space downtown. The paella and patatas bravas are non-negotiables.
The Boathouse – Upscale seafood & brunch spot on Hendry’s beach with panoramic ocean views and a heated outdoor patio.
Bettina, Montecito – A modern pizzeria and neighborhood favorite known for wood-fired pizzas made with locally milled grains, beautiful salads, and natural wines. Go early and sit on the patio—it’s casual but effortlessly chic.
Flor de Maiz – A waterfront favorite celebrating Oaxacan cuisine with modern flair. Expect handmade tortillas, smoky mezcal cocktails, and dishes like mole negro and grilled seafood that showcase local California ingredients through a Mexican lens. It’s lively, colorful, and ideal for sunset dining.
Lucky’s – Classic steakhouse glamour in Montecito. Perfect martinis, oysters, and a dose of old-Hollywood energy.
The Lark – A Santa Barbara institution serving market-driven dishes in the Funk Zone. The kind of place that feels both buzzy and intimate, especially when dining al fresco under the string lights.
BEST SANTA BARBARA BEACHES
Ledbetter Beach – A favorite for beginner surfing lessons thanks to the easy waves and laid back attitude, my husband had his first surf lesson here! There’s a great area with picnic tables and grills if you’re feeling a little cookout.
Hendry’s Beach – Super dog friendly and an easy walk over to The Boathouse (mentioned above), this spot is one of the local’s favorites.
Butterfly Beach – Another local favorite, it’s a popular spot on sunny days so parking can be hard to find. There are not a ton of amenities around it so be sure to pack a yummy picnic!
THINGS TO DO IN SANTA BARBARA
Ganna Walksa’s Lotusland – The most beautiful botanical garden. Be sure to check out their private tours that run during the spring and summer.
The Funk Zone – A couple-block radius right off the pier, The Funk Zone has tons of awesome wine tasting rooms, and is a great place to scope out which wineries you’d like to hit if you plan to spend a day up in Santa Ynez. Hang around for its outdoor eating and local wine and craft beer.
Hiking at Inspiration Point – This intermediate hike is fairly short (3.5 miles round trip) and leads into Santa Barbara’s foothills and ends with an incredible view of the city. On a clear day you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of downtown, the coastline and maybe even the Channel Islands. Pro tip – plan your hike so you end up at the top at sunset. The Mission – Founded in 1786, The Mission is one of Santa Barbara’s most historic and picturesque landmarks. You can tour the still active church and explore the grounds – where you’ll see 17th-century art, re-creations of the Mission’s living quarters and kitchen, graceful architecture and the colorful gardens.
Santa Barbara Courthouse – With its Spanish-Colonial style, elaborate hand-painted murals and amazing view from the top of the clock tour, this is a must see! Fun fact: Gwyneth Paltrow married Chris Martin here! Be sure to check the events schedule to see if there’s an outdoor movie going at the Courthouse’s Sunken Gardens. Movie showings are free and usually begin around 8:30pm. Bring snacks, jackets and a cozy blanket!
Solvang – After a quick (35 miles north of SB) and beautiful drive through the mountains, you’ll find yourself in the quant Danish capital of America. Take in the town’s numerous shops, bakeries, windmills, 15+ wine tasting rooms and stop by Copenhagen Sausage Garden for lunch!
WHERE TO SHOP
The Well, Summerland – A curated mix of home, garden, and lifestyle pieces that feel like a masterclass in California design. Hand-thrown pottery, antique wood furniture, and sculptural planters—everything here has soul.
Montecito Country Mart & Coast Village Road – For elevated shopping that still feels effortless. You’ll find Jenni Kayne, Mate the Label, and locally owned boutiques with timeless fashion and homeware.
Godmothers Bookstore, Summerland – My newest obsession. It’s small, soulful, and stocked with beautiful reads, journals, and indie titles. They also serve excellent espresso, so it’s easy to lose an hour or two here.

Every time I come home from Santa Barbara, I feel refreshed. Maybe it’s the salt air, maybe it’s the design inspiration around every corner, or maybe it’s the way time seems to slow just enough for you to notice the beauty in small things.
Whether you’re craving a creative reset, a romantic weekend, or a wellness escape, Santa Barbara has this rare way of giving you exactly what you didn’t know you needed. I can’t wait to go back—and when I do, you’ll find me between the farmers’ market and another long, slow dinner under the stars.
