The original ending of Mythic Quest Season 4 was the first TV show finale that made me literally scream out loud in frustration.
Thankfully, when Apple TV+ announced its cancellation, after Side Quest’s premiere, they changed the ending.
Mythic Quest has always earned praise for showcasing Poppy and Ian’s toxic but thrilling friendship since the beginning of the series.
So, a large population of fans were upset when Poppy and Ian shared a kiss right before Poppy left to be with her boyfriend in Europe.
The show cut the kiss scene out from the last episode once word got out that the show would be ending for good.
That doesn’t mean that their decision to force a last-minute romance between Poppy and Ian has gone under the radar.
Poppy and Ian’s Friendship Has Always Been Sacred
Friendships between male and female lead characters are far fewer than romantic relationships.
Ian and Poppy were a great exception to the rule, as their dynamic on the show has always been strictly platonic.
The show has delved into the intricacies of balancing work and friendship through examining Ian and Poppy’s friendship, which has gone through rough patches and great celebrations.
Considering that Mythic Quest has always championed Poppy and Ian as friends, it’s surprising that they would suddenly try to make them romantically involved when there’s minimal build-up to suggest that their friendship would take a romantic turn.
Additionally, there’s not really any reason for Poppy and Ian to be in a relationship after all this time.
Mythic Quest has demonstrated that they work best as collaborators and friends first, so it’s confusing as to why the show would completely veer into left field.
Some fans pointed out that there were plenty of moments between the two that one could interpret as romantic during the series.
In response, I would argue that none of Ian and Poppy’s interactions, particularly pre-Season 4, were inherently romantic.
Just because a guy and a girl are interacting and know each other deeply, it doesn’t mean that they’re in love.
Ian and Poppy’s friendship was once an outstanding example of male and female friendship, but a forced kiss now taints what the show tried to pretend never existed.
Mythic Quest Preserves Its Legacy
I honestly didn’t find Mythic Quest’s cancellation announcement all too surprising.
Since Season 2, Mythic Quest hasn’t been all too fun to watch as the show has fallen victim to inconsistent characterizations and mediocre storylines.
When the streamer announced the show would be ending with its latest season, Mythic Quest also decided to alter the last episode to give audiences some closure.
They made minimal changes to the episode, with the big difference being that they no longer kept the kiss in.
Instead, Poppy and Ian share a hug before Poppy leaves on the flight to join her boyfriend.
This decision demonstrates that Mythic Quest clearly saw how upset audiences were by the original kiss and believed that it wouldn’t be worth it to ruin the entire show’s legacy with one scene.
While I’m glad that the show cut the kiss, I’m still upset that it happened in the first place.
Mythic Quest has already earned its status as one of Apple TV+‘s first successful comedies, but it might not go down as a legendary show after admitting that it made a massive mistake by forcing one of the best friendships on TV into a rushed, half-baked romance.
Ian and Poppy deserved so much better, and I will stand by this until the day that I die.
