Brilliant Minds’ New Docs Could Bring Beautiful Disruption to Sophomore Season

Brilliant Minds’ New Docs Could Bring Beautiful Disruption to Sophomore Season

By the end of Brilliant Minds Season 1, Oliver and his wolf cubs had become something of a family.

Sure, they had their fair share of messiness here and there, namely with the love triangle between Ericka, Van, and Jacob. There’s nothing like a terrifying event that jeopardizes a loved one to put things into perspective.

The season finale didn’t leave us with too many conflicts on a professional front.

(Rafy/NBC)

Poor Ericka will likely spend part of the sophomore season grappling with PTSD, as she’s turned to medication to help her, but only in secret.

The guys are intent on helping her and supporting each other, as Van reconsiders finding an anchor in others beyond Ericka, and things may have thawed between Ericka and Dana.

But there’s nothing that could threaten or disrupt what the interns have forged with one another. Like any family, they can work through the minor issues that arise, and things will ultimately pan out.

And that’s why it makes sense that the sophomore season will include a new addition who could potentially shake things up.

Even Jacob and Van have forged a brotherhood with one another that can reasonably survive the love triangle they’re in, so their conflict, while interesting, poses no real threat to the group.

(Rafy/ NBC)

Nothing can challenge established characters like the incorporation of someone new, though.

The sophomore season has cast Harlan Coben’s Shelter actor Brian Altemus into the role of a neurology resident who will have to mingle with Wolf and the others.

He’ll play Dr. Charlie Porter, a new resident who is guarded and incredibly competitive.

Porter approaches medicine like it’s a game to win, which is a stark contrast to the interns and how they’ve learned to practice medicine under Oliver’s tutelage.

The guys have notoriously been more competitive than the girls when it comes to practicing medicine. Still, they’ve since settled into their roles and leaned into Oliver’s approach of treating the entire patient rather than just the symptoms.

(Rafy/ NBC)

Oliver’s brood has also learned to turn what they may have otherwise viewed as weaknesses and quirks — such as Dana’s anxiety and Van’s Mirror Touch Syndrome — into their own superpowers, tools to aid them in treating patients better and making proper diagnoses.

The whole team is a delightful mishmash of misfits and odd individuals, each with something unique that aligns them with neurology and Oliver’s approach to practicing medicine.

It sounds like Porter, at least in the beginning, may be the character to disrupt that completely, and with that comes the type of delicious tension and conflict that could bring out the best of the others (or the worst, depending on how they respond).

Porter could bring new challenges to the team and how things flow in their department.

Troy Taylor - Harlan Coben's Shelter
(Michael Parmelee/Amazon)

Interestingly, Deadline teases that Porter will be hiding something from his peers. If he’s anything like the others, he may have his own quirks or be battling various neuro or psychological issues of his own.

It’ll be exciting when Brilliant Minds cracks this character wide open — no one can stay too guarded and closed off on this series for long, and there’s something so disarming about Oliver and the others.

Something tells me Porter may put up a good fight and definitely cause some drama and tension among the others, but it won’t last too long.

Meanwhile, the second addition to the series will definitely turn Oliver’s work life upside down in a way that I look forward to seeing.

For starters, the series has cast John Clarence Stewart, a delightfully versatile actor whom I’ve enjoyed in many series, ranging from his endearing performance in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist to his heartwrenching one in P-Valley.

Simon stars - Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 2 Episode 9
(Sergei Bachlakov/NBC)

However, in addition to stellar casting, we have the potential for a fantastic character who will challenge Oliver in new and exciting ways.

We understand Oliver’s approach to patient care, as well as his willingness to challenge conventional practices, prioritizing the whole person rather than merely focusing on symptoms.

However, new doctor, Dr. Anthony Thorne, has a different approach that could clash with Oliver.

  • I Can’t Believe We Have To Wait ANOTHER Month For My Life With The Walter Boys Season 2!

  • The Rookie’s Latest Spinoff Sounds Awfully Familiar
    by Paul Dailly

He’s a mid-career ER doctor who views his job as blue-collar work, which means he’ll approach medicine and patients with a distinctly different perspective than Oliver, who comes from esteemed doctors and a relatively privileged upbringing.

Anthony Thorne is a charmer (and he’s easy on the eyes, too), whose thought process is that he can help everyone in small ways rather than doing the absolute most for only a few.

(Rafy/NBC)

While Anthony cares about his patients in a similar way to Oliver, the way he expresses that manifests differently.

Anthony wants to help as many people as possible at once, versus Oliver ensuring that he can assist a single person to the best of his abilities until they’re whole.

It sets things up for the two to bump heads frequently during various medical cases, and while Oliver is wrapping his head around all the drama in his personal life, a bit of a friendly rivalry with a new doctor could be fun.

But I also wonder if this super attractive charmer, who is a capable doctor, who challenges Oliver, could potentially serve as another type of conflict.

We can safely assume that Oliver and Josh are the series’ endgame. And they’ve certainly heated up the screen and been the show’s most endearing couple.

(Rafy/NBC)

However, I wouldn’t put it past the show to push against that, too, as no couple on a primetime series can have smooth sailing on their path to being together.

The first season concluded with the two in a place of uncertainty. Oliver didn’t take the news that Josh loved him well — he doesn’t seem emotionally ready to be loved by someone.

And he handled it poorly when he stood Josh up. It’s not a great place for them to be, suggesting that while they’re a wonderful pairing, the timing isn’t right for them just yet.

It feels like the perfect time to introduce a charismatic doctor who could shake things up in more ways than one. That may be wishful thinking on my part.

However, one thing is sure: with these casting choices, Brilliant Minds is setting up a fascinating second season!
